Use the right scissors for the job.
Small, delicate cuts like clipping curves and V-shapes for applique require small scissors with very sharp points. Use them on one to two layers of quilting weight fabric only.
Longer cuts (trimming log cabin stips, cutting out applique shapes) should be made with a longer blade from 5" to 6". Again, stick to one or two layers of fabric.
Cutting multiple layers requires a sturdier, thicker, and blade, at least 7" long.
For power cutting (like fringing strips for a Rag Fur Jacket) you need heavy duty scissors that will slice through up to 8 layers of batik at once.
