Here is a photo of the banana hanger that I use to hold my cone thread when using a regular sewing machine. It is plastic and comes apart so it can be carried in a sewing basket very easily. It is sold in the produce department of grocery stores and is meant to hang bananas to keep them from touching anything and then browning faster. I paid $3.95 for mine last year.

As you can see, the red thread goes up and over the hook and then to the back of the sewing machine. I stand this hanger behind my sewing machine so it does not interfere with the item that is coming out of the back of the sewing machine.

I use a large coffee mug to set the thread cone inside to keep it from tipping over when I am filling my bobbin. It stands quite well for just plain sewing, but that bobbin winding goes too fast and it does top over. A small jar would do the same trick to keep the thread standing.
